With a list of companies like
Aker Solutions, ExxonMobil, Shell, Atlantic Marine, Offshore Inland and
Technip located in the Mobile area, a knowledgeable workforce is one of many
advantages that Mobile offers oil and gas companies. Mobile is located in a
right-to-work state with favorable labor/management conditions, competitive
wage rates and large regional and highly skilled workforce. This makes the
cost of operation very attractive.
Since the early 1980’s when Alabama leased drilling rights in the waters in
and around the lower part of Mobile Bay, the natural gas infrastructure has
continued to grow. And with the upswing in offshore drilling, the Mobile
area shipyards such as Atlantic Marine, Horizon Ship Building, Inc, C &
G Boat Works and Signal Ship Repair continue to build offshore oil and gas vessels. In addition,
these shipyards as well as others in Bayou La Batre have full service repair yards and large
floating drydocks capable of overhauling, repairing and upgrading drilling rigs, drill ships and pipe
laying vessels.
ExxonMobil is a major gas producer in Mobile Bay and offshore Alabama. Mobil
Oil initially discovered the gas, followed by Exxon and Shell Exploration &
Production. These companies, along with Williams Mobile Bay Producer
Services, process millions of cubic feet of gas per day. From these gas
processing plants, gas is piped by way of major interstate pipelines such as
Transco, Gulf South, Gulfstream and Florida Gas Transmission pipelines to
markets through the southeast and east coast. Additionally, natural gas
storage is available in |

underground salt domes in McIntosh (north of
Mobile) by Sempra Pipelines & Storage or
underground in Coden (south of Mobile) by MoBay Storage Hub Inc.
TORP Terminal LP has applied to build a liquefied natural gas terminal 63
miles south of Dauphin Island. Berg Spiral Pipe Corp. has built a new
greenfield DSAW Spiral welded Pipe Mill in Mobile with sizes from 24" thru
56" satisfying customer requirements for on shore and off shore gas pipelines.
The Alabama State Port
Authority’s Middle Bay Port is located just south of Mobile on the Theodore
Industrial Canal. The ship canal is maintained at a 36 foot draft and is
22 miles from the Gulf of Mexico sea buoy. In addition to the Alabama
State Port Authority, the ship canal is home to Aker Solutions,
Offshore Inland Marine, Technip’s “spool base", homebase for Technip's "Deep
Blue" pipe-laying vessel and three shore base service contractors –
Midstream Fuel Service,
Construction Solutions and Core Industries. These shore bases can
provice products and services to drilling rigs and platforms in shallow water, deepwater and ultradeepwater. Additionally, 24 hour fuel service is available.
A four-lane highway provides easy access from Interstate
10 to Middle Bay Port and the Theodore Industrial Canal. I-10 borders
Brookley Airport and Complex and is seven miles from the Theodore
Industrial Canal.
As a growing natural gas cluster, the Mobile area is the home to our
expanding community of over 150 businesses serving the oil and gas
business and continues to attract companies who support the exploration
and drilling in state waters and in the adjacent federal government
deepwater and, the outer continental shelf. With an excellent location, easy accessibility, low cost of
operation, Mobile will play an increasingly important role as far more
drilling activity occurs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and moves further
offshore.
