Summer Scrubs 2010              
      A free, one-week camp for high school students considering careers in healthcare

What is Summer Scrubs?

Summer Scrubs is an intensive career exploration opportunity for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in Mobile and Baldwin counties who want to explore careers in healthcare.

Participants

  • spend each day at a different site, exploring a variety of healthcare-related careers.
  • interact with health professionals and observe them on the job in a ‘real-world’ environment.
  • are able to discuss and ask questions about healthcare jobs and the educational paths available.
Who can participate?

Students who will be in 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2010 and meet the selection criteria can apply for Summer Scrubs. The following is a list of the selection criteria for the program:

  • Interest in attending college to pursue a career in healthcare
  • A GPA of 2.5 or above
  • No record of disciplinary action
  • No unexcused absences
When is Summer Scrubs 2010?

Monday, July 26th through Friday, July 30th, 2010

8:00am until 12:00pm
 

Students will be assigned to groups of five or ten and the groups will rotate through different healthcare sites each day.
 
How can I be a part of Summer Scrubs 2010?

Summer Scrubs participants are chosen based on a point system. Each piece of information provided in the application package is awarded points (see scoring box below).

Application Steps:

  • Complete the Application
  • Complete the Essay question – This is an important part of the application
  • Ask your counselor for your unweighted GPA and be sure to complete that section of the Application
  • Ask two teachers for Recommendations
  • (one must be a math or science teacher)

How can I Score Bonus Points for Summer Scrubs 2010?

Bonus Points can be scored in THREE ways!

1.  Apply EARLY- Any student who has a complete application turned in by March 5th will receive 2 bonus points added to their final score.

2.  Apply ONLINE- Any student who completes the entire application process ONLINE will receive 2 bonus points added to their final score.

3.  Refer TWO- Refer a friend to the program and get 1 bonus point added to final score. Earn up to 2 bonus points in total.
 
Maximum Possible Score 156 Points

Two teacher recommendations must be submitted in order for your application to be complete. Please note that ONE recommendation MUST be from a Math or Science teacher.

Special Tips

Essay- The essay is a MAJOR part of the selection decision and accounts for up to 70 POINTS almost HALF of the total points available. Please take time to collect and write your thoughts before you submit the essay. Check spelling and grammar!  Final essay score will take into consideration correct spelling and proper grammar. 

Check your Acceptance Status

The 2009 Summer Scrubs Program had over 350 applicants. Many times a good candidate is not chosen because of an incomplete application (such as a missing teacher recommendation or missing essay).

Following up on recommendation letters and having a complete application package is the applicant’s responsibility!

It is in your best interest to check on your status BEFORE the application deadline of March 19th  to make sure your application package is complete.

Information for Selected Participants
Participants selected:
  • Will receive by mail a package with additional information
  • You will receive instructions on obtaining a tuberculosis (TB) test
  • Must attend a mandatory orientation session for all Summer Scrubs participants and their parent/guardian. The session time and location will be determined at a later date and all participants will be informed.
During this session, participants will:
  • Receive orientation and HIPAA training
  • Last chance to bring TB test form
  • Confirm participation in SS 2010
Note: Participants will collect their scrubs and rotation schedule at a date closer to the start of the SS program. Pick up will be at the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.
