Selected Business Announcements
Choctaw Point - APM Terminals/CMA CGM - The Alabama State Port Authority has approved a concession agreement with Mobile Container Terminal LLC to develop a new container terminal at Choctaw Point. Mobile Container Terminal LLC, a joint venture between APM Terminals North America (80%), headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands and a subsidiary of Maersk Inc., and Terminal Link, a division of CMA CGM (20%), with a head-office in Marseille, France, will provide terminal customers with access to global networks covering all possible trade routes to and from the Port of Mobile. APM Terminals will operate and manage the terminal.Construction of the container terminal began in April 2005 and operations are expected to begin in the second half of 2007 with a start up capacity of more than 350,000 TEU. The Mobile Container Terminal project will be developed in phases, and at full build out, will have an annual capacity of 800,000 TEU. Once operations begin in late 2007, the container terminal is expected to create more than 300 permanent jobs.
The overall project, which will include a separate intermodal rail transfer facility and modern distribution complex, will represent a total investment of approximately $300 million. The Authority and Mobile Container Terminal will jointly invest in the infrastructure for the container terminal with Mobile Container Terminal providing all buildings and equipment.
EADS North America - Mobile Alabama's Brookley Industrial Complex has been selected by EADS North America as the site for the EADS KC-330 advanced tanker U.S.production facility. An Airbus Engineering Center will be co-located with the future production facility and is scheduled to begin operations in 2006.
The decision was announced on June 22, 2005 by EADS North America, completing a five-month nationwide search for the location that will become the center of activity for the KC-330 - which is being offered to recapitalize the U.S. Air Force's aerial refueling fleet.
Development of the KC-330 industrial facility will begin as a new Airbus Engineering Center in the United States, with operations starting in early 2006 and its employment growing to approximately 150 persons. This facility is to support continuing engineering work on commercial Airbus models and military derivative aircraft - including the A330, A340 and A350 jetliners, as well as the KC-330 tanker.
Production will be initiated at the Mobile facility upon receipt of an order from the U.S. Air Force for the KC-330 aerial refueling tanker. Activities will include aircraft final assembly, militarization and modification. Depending on the size and pace of the Air Force order, the total facility investment could reach $600 million, and direct employment levels could be as high as 1,000 workers --including a mix of structure mechanics, electronic and systems specialists, engineers, quality assurance personnel and management.
IPSCO Steel (Alabama) Inc. selected Mobile to locate its continuous plate heat treating operation, which will be one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the world. The 140,000 square feet, $45 million facility will produce 170,000 tons per year of steel add an additional 25 jobs. The facility is expected to be fully-operational in the first quarter of 2006.
AustalShips Pty. Ltd., an Australian ship building company, has paired with a local company, Bender Shipbuilding to form Austal USA. Austal is the world leader in building high-speed catamaran ferry ships for passengers and autos. The yard opened with approximately 200 new jobs and has the capacity to expand to 1,000 jobs and has invested about $10 million in our local economy with their new facility. In 2003 Austal was part of a contract awarded to design and build a Littoral Combat Ship for the U.S. Navy.
IPSCO Steel(Alabama) Inc. opened a world-class in-line plate mini mill in Mobile County. The facility was a $425 million investment into our area. The mini-mill will primarily serve the U.S. Gulf states, which have had the nation's highest growth rate in steel consumption in recent years, and employs approximately 450 people. Each year, the plant is expected to produce 1.25 million tons (1.1 million m. tons) of plate and coiled steel.
