THE ENVIRONMENT

The members of the Gulf Coast Regional Chamber Coalition recognize that healthy air and clean water are absolute essentials for the people of our communities. We also recognize that jobs and family security are important as well and that regulation of business should be based on sound science. A balance between these two factors that allows economic growth while producing an outstanding quality of life is essential in the competitive years ahead.
LEADING PRIORITIES FOR THE REGION IDENTIFIED BY THE COALITION
  • Support the Conservation and reinvestment Act (CARA), which would provide $1 billion annually to states of the Gulf Coast Regional Chamber Coalition affected by offshore drilling. The legislation also will provide for a land and water conservation fund, wildlife conservation, urban parks, recreation areas and historic preservation. All are goals that will enhance quality of life in partnership with business.
  • Support measures to control costs imposed on industry by the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that sound science is employed in determining regulation of business.
  • Support measures that would limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s permitting power to standards of environmental performance.
  • Establish community groups to examine best practices to effectively find solutions to such issues as ozone, wastewater disposal and in understanding the issues surrounding environmental justice.
  • Develop an impact analysis of the affects of environmental regulation on business throughout the region.
