LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS

The Gulf Coast Regional Chamber Coalition understands the collective stature of its Congressional delegations on Capitol Hill. The Coalition, as part of its goal of encouraging a climate that is conducive to the development of new business and jobs throughout the region, will work closely with its senators and representatives to bring about a public/private dialogue that will result in greater understanding of the forces impacting economic growth.
LEADING PRIORITIES FOR THE REGION IDENTIFIED BY THE COALITION
  • Support the Trade and Development Act of 1999, which includes both the Caribbean Basin Initiative enhancement and trade and development provisions for democratic nations in sub-Saharan Africa. CBI enhancement will provide our neighboring Central American countries a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. This, in turn, would benefit our regional ports and airport. Further, increased trade and investment in sub-Saharan Africa will provide those nations with incentives to institutionalize democratization and increase commercial development so that they may become self-sufficient.
  • Support admission of China to the World Trade Organization, which would require China to adhere to global trade rules. This effectively would normalize trade relations.
  • In meetings in Washington, D.C., and in the communities served by the Coalition, communicate regularly with our senators and representatives in such areas as military affairs, transportation infrastructure, efforts to enhance hurricane and flood protection, the enhancement of education and other sectors that affect the region’s ability to compete in the global marketplace.
  • Oppose unilateral U.S. economic sanctions imposed for foreign policy reasons, except in cases when such sanctions are opposed in response to a direct threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United States.
